This will be the first Christmas nearly 20 years I won’t be working. I worked every Christmas as cop… I was young and single and it seemed like the right thing to do for the older guys who were married, I’d swap shifts with one of them so he could spend the day with his family. When I left the PD and joined our local volunteer fire company I did the same thing. In ten years Maggie’s never once complained or protested she’s always understood. This year when we were making out the holiday schedules one of the younger guys came up to me and said “You’ve got a family I’ll take your shift”… I was speechless, I’ve never thought about it I’ve just always volunteered to work Christmas. In a way it feels kind of weird knowing I won’t be at the house with my brothers and sisters. At the same time though I’m looking forward to spending the day with my family… My parents are coming over, Maggie’s folks are coming in, and so are her sisters in law and their kids. I don’t know why it just feels right to let someone else take my post this year. Maybe it's time...
