Recommending Cuba as a holiday destination.
Well, if you want to see the real Cubans life you definitely must see Havana. I spent 3 days there and I could get to see the real face of it. I got a new friend there who showed me the parts where tourists dont go. The people are living from 20 USD! a month and they still get to eat from the food tickets which is 10 pieces of egg anf 2 kgs of rice a month...
It is very sad. But it was interesting to see another culture for sure.
I asked a taxi driver as I could see him earning more money and he simply said it isnt his money at all. He has to pay all the money he made to the government and after at the end of the month he gets payed the 20...
People were very straight about telling the story of their life.
As far as Varadero it does not feel like you were in Cuba at all. A 5 star hotel cant be compared to Havana.
This place is only for the tourists and it is closed from Cuban people as Varadero is on a long tounge half island. Only people who work in the hotels can enter. Strange. I guess they dont want to let the Cubans see how else they could live.
The white sand beaches were worth to visit anyways and the people I met there were very kind. ( maybe because of the topless tanning? )
The weather wasn't perfect it was always partly cloudy but this way it was harder to get a bad sun burn.
That is all folks ;)

Did you notice the highly reflective window tint on a lot of the old cars over there? It's like a mirror tint. The sort of thing that would be illegal in lots of places.
And i see you found the markets okay. Did you buy lots of stuff? Oh, did you get any black coral jewellery?
Can't wait to see more pictures girl. :D :icon_hug:

It kinds of remind me of Vietnam. Visited a decade ago while still a child. Remembering and thinking about it makes life so... Anyway, it just make you think about your life, cherrish it and makes you realize how lucky you are... And at the same time, sorry for them in my opinion. :icon_yes: :(
On another note, I'd definitely book a flight for Cuba if I could in the future. It sounds really fun from what I have seen from you and Grant's posts and pictures. :)

Yes I know aboutthe shades on the car window. Actually I took a pics about one that only had a little string uncovered. It is illegal here as well.
I bought mostly pictures and a few jewelery but I did not buy coral ones as it is not allowed to bring in the EU.
Most of them is made of bone and melone seeds :)
I need to organise the pics first ( 5-600 images ) then will post some more :)

Sandra, I completely agree with you.
Do you remember my email I wrote you before leaving ? When I told you that it would be absolutely worth your while to live the real Cuba, I meant all that.
Varadero, with its tourists and 5 stars hotels, say nothing about Cuba: it would be nonsense to stay in Varadero without meeting the people and understanding their real way of living.
I'm really happy you managed to both visit the real Cuba and enjoy the beautiful beaches. As regards people kindness at the beach, I think that topless tanning may have contributed ..., don't you think so ?

I had a similar experience when I went to the Bahamas. We decided to venture out from out hotel that was right on the beach. We took the city bus, and saw nothing but poverty and devastation, it was really sad. It really pissed me off as well; a country that makes millions of dollars on tourism alone that refuses to use this money to help the people who live there.

My respect to you Sandra for telling the truth about Cuba, it most be hard to live there, there are doctors and engeeniers working as taxi and bus drivers because there is a good education program but they cant work as they want because there is no place to work and they cant leave the island, so they "work" as any thing that is on the hand, well one of my aunts went there for a vacation and she tell me that the people where she stay asked her to leave the toilet paper, tooth brushs, tooth paste, soap and deodorant in the house because they dont have that in Cuba and if some Cuban aproach to you and ask you to give them what you have (clothes, hats, etc) and a soldier or a cop look the aproaching they get arrested like for a week, so when a old woman ask my aunt for her hat and a cop just turn around the corner she start like to give her directions to get to a plaza... poor lady... anyway Sandra is good to see you visiting this side of the planet but is sad that you didnt come to Guatemala (yet)... I was so close to you girl and .. God... I just cant believe I lost the oportunity to meet you... lol.

Yes it is very sad that people there are so poor but to be honest I somewhat envy their attitude. They are walking on the street smiling and they dont care about their problem. They have tons of friends there and they have fun together. They have cigars, rum and salsa. And they are happy :)
Too bad that we didnt meetbut since I love traveling Guatemala might be on my list too :)

Interesting hotels opened to Cubans shortly after Sandra's visit. Er, Sandra, we, like, need health care in this country.....
