Exactly, I've played quite few rounds on similar courses. Playing out of the waste areas is an adventure, but I can't imagine a golf club striking a rock would create enough of a spark to start a fire.

Lt. Gen. Mark Hertling opted to discontinue bayonet training for Army recruits. After all, the last US bayonet charge was in 1951. But in the weeks since that decision, Hertling has had some pushback.

When a US Army general made the decision recently to remove bayonet assaults from the array of skills soldiers must learn during basic training, it seemed like a no-brainer.

US troops hadn’t launched a bayonet charge since 1951 during the Korean War. And new soldiers preparing for an increasingly violent war in Afghanistan already need to learn far more skills than the 10 weeks of basic training allows, says Lt. Gen. Mark Hertling, head of initial entry training and the Army’s Training and Doctrine Command.

So he made a change, substituting skills drill sergeants reported that they wanted to teach new recruits in favor of dropping the time-honored practice of the bayonet charge.

The objections to ending the training are occasionally practical.

In 2004, with ammunition running low, a British unit launched a bayonet charge toward a trench outside of Basra, Iraq, where some 100 members of the Mahdi Army militia were staging an attack. The British soldiers later said that though some of the insurgents were wounded in the bayonet charge itself, others were simply terrified into surrender.

I agree with you that it would seem to be very difficult to do....but you'd
probably also have to agree that it could certainly be possible.

It could take only one decently created spark to land in
just the right place..and with the correct conditions being
in that right place...a fire could potentially start up.

If the fire story was even true...I still think that a cigarette or
a match might've actually started up the fire.

I've always wondered about the type of club being used..and the
type of rock that might've been struck.


If a metal club face was scratched long enough along the right
type of rock...it could have potentially created a somewhat
long stretch of sparks....maybe a few inches or more in length...depending
upon the length of the rock and the point of contact etc.

If the Mythbusters were to take something like this on...I think
that they would create a situation that would try to recreate
a long stretching line of sparks....not just a quick flash.
(...a larger display of sparks would be a better visual for
the TV slow motion shots. ;) )

Anthony Gurreri is reminded every day of his service in Operation Iraqi Freedom when he wakes up with no job to go to because he is physically disabled, his wife said.

But with Veterans Day approaching, someone left the entire Gurreri family with a much nastier reminder.

"Go back to Iraq and kill more women and kids" was spray-painted on the hood of the family SUV, and "MUDER" -- murder misspelled -- was scratched into the paint on the driver's door.

A former lance corporal in the Marines, Gurreri spent nearly a year in Iraq in 2006, wife Stacie Gurreri said. In addition to being shot, he was injured by a couple improvised explosive devices, she said.

Meghan Brown, a former Florida pageant queen, shot and killed 42-year-old

Wait for the NTSB report... He was doing an aileron roll, NOT a combination a loop and barrel role. An aileron roll is an aerobatic maneuver in which the aircraft does a full 360° revolution about its longitudinal axis, it starts with the pilot pulling the aircraft into a brief climb with the nose roughly 10 to 30 degrees above the horizon. As the aircraft begins to roll it starts to lose lift, so you add rudder to keep the nose up as wings roll to 90 degrees. As it rolls inverted you add down elevator and gradually ease off as it rolls from inverted. When done properly, there is no appreciable change in altitude and the aircraft exits the maneuver on the same heading as it entered.

Anyway, what I saw in the videos looked like a text book aileron roll right up until the point where he dug a smoking hole in the ground... The reason I say wait for the NTSB report is that mechanical failure is a possibilty, but based on what I saw in video it looks like airfame stalled and he simply didn't have enough altitude to recover.

It's hard to tell what the exact layout and locations/distances really were based on what was shown in the video clip.

The ferris wheel didn't really look to be very tall....tops maybe 50-60 feet high?
(..although..obviously...that's high enough to do the trick.)

Who knows...maybe in that area there could have been other types of structures and/or obstructions of a similar
height or even higher....so maybe that wasn't a major consideration.

I found the runway on google maps...and I matched up what seems to be the exact location of the ferris wheel...based on
the image shown in the video clip.

It might've been in line with the end of runway....but the distance and safety/height aspects might be debatable.
Offhand I would say that there probably shouldn't ever be any room for debate....but I have no idea how active that
airstrip actually is..and with what type of aircraft. (...ultralights?...shown flying nearby in the video.)

There are some high trees in the area....but none of the trees appear to be as high as the ferris wheel.

You can see how the guy's approach would have been from the opposite end of the runway.
Flying VFR..I wonder if he ever saw the ferris wheel at all during a fly by or during his landing approach.
I'm sure that his attention was elsewhere....but how could that be missed off in the distance at that height?
(..small thin white framework of the ferris wheel lost in the light and the sky background?...and/or..maybe the very top might have been
obscured just enough by various clutter on the ground?)

I read a short story in the newspaper today about that light plane crashing into the ferris wheel. It mentioned that a number of witnesses said that it looked like the ferris wheel had been set up too close to the end of the runway.



I just read Steve Jobs passed away. It's very sad :(I saw that on the news today. I knew he wasn't doing very well, but i was still surprised to hear about it.
They mentioned something about him in the shorts but i didn't hear what it was about. Then later on, i saw a short message scroll past on the news ticker along the bottom of the screen and it said that he'd passed away.
The same way that Patrick Swayze went.
Let's hope that Apple has some minds of equal greatness to continue what he started.

It's very sad :(i never had anything with Mac or apple, or even the ipod/iphone/ipad and all that stuff, but i do know Steve Jobs had some major influence in his specific market. i am a big fan to all of the Pixar stuff though, but i never knew Steve was involved with that until now.

i am a big fan to all of the Pixar stuff though, but i never knew Steve was involved with that until now.

He bought into Pixar as a cutting edge technology company (..and also to help out George Lucas.) ..and then he "lucked out"
when Pixar became a leading animation studio with huge hit after huge hit.
Pixar is an amazing story..and as with most things Jobs related..his actual involvement remains a questionable mystery. (..by design.)


I wouldn't exactly call his passing "so sudden".
It's been acknowledged that he's been "ill" since at least 2003...and possibly even sometime before that.

I knew he was not doing well, but in spite of that I was really sad to hear about his death. I will always remember his fascinating and inspiring speech at the Stanford University in 2005: 'STAY HUNGRY, STAY FOOLISH'

Police say around 11:30 p.m. Friday, Anthony Miranda, 24, walked up to a car parked at 55th Street and Kenneth Avenue, just a few blocks from Midway International Airport.

Miranda asked the driver for a lighter, and the driver said he didn't have one. Then Miranda pulled a handgun and demanded that the driver hand over his money, police said.

Even after the driver complied and gave up some money, Miranda ordered him out of his car, police said.

DUBLIN, Calif.—A stunt for the TV show "MythBusters" sent an errant cannonball through a California family's house and into a parked minivan a few hundred feet away.

Producers for the Discovery Channel show fired the cannonball Tuesday at the Alameda County Sheriff's Department bomb range behind the Santa Rita Jail when it misfired.

Sheriff's spokesman J.D. Nelson told the Contra Costa Times that no one was injured and the home's residents didn't even wake up until the dust was settled -- literally on top of them.

Nelson, who is also a consultant for the show, said producers have used the cannon that they built at the range more than 50 times without incident.

The cannonball was supposed to go through a few water-filled barrels and a concrete wall. Instead, it passed over the barrels, through the wall,
and then took a "very unfortunate bounce that sent the ball skyward," Nelson said.

About 700 feet away, it bounced in front of the Dublin home, then tore through the front door and out a wall on the back of the house. The
projectile then bounced at least once more and crossed the road before smashing the window and dashboard of the minivan, where it came to rest.

CAIRO: An Islamic cleric residing in Europe said that women should not be close to bananas or cucumbers, in order to avoid any “sexual thoughts.”

The unnamed sheikh, who was featured in an article on el-Sawsana news, was quoted saying that if women wish to eat these food items, a third party, preferably a male related to them such as their a father or husband, should cut the items into small pieces and serve.

He said that these fruits and vegetables “resemble the male penis” and hence could arouse women or “make them think of sex.” Bikyamasr.com cannot independently verify the accuracy of the news item at time of writing.

He also added carrots and zucchini to the list of forbidden foods for women.

The sheikh was asked how to “control” women when they are out shopping for groceries and if holding these items at the market would be bad for them. The cleric answered saying this matter is between them and God.

Answering another question about what to do if women in the family like these foods, the sheikh advised the interviewer to take the food and cut it for them in a hidden place so they cannot see it.

The opinion has stirred a storm of irony and denouncement among Muslims online, with hundreds of comments mocking the cleric.

One reader said that these religious “leaders” give Islam “a bad name” and another commented said that he is a “retarded” person and he must quite his post immediately.

Others called him a seeker of fame, but no official responses from renowned Islamic scholars have been published on the statements.
